32:1Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great abundance of livestock. And when they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, that the place was indeed a place for livestock,

32:2The children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spoke to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the assembly, saying,

32:3Ataroth and Dibon and Jazer and Nimrah and Heshbon and Elealeh and Sebam and Nebo and Beon,

32:4The land which Jehovah struck before the assembly of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.

32:5And they said, If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession; do not make us cross over the Jordan.

32:6And Moses said to the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brothers go to war, while you stay here?

32:7Now why would you discourage the heart of the children of Israel from crossing over into the land which Jehovah has given them?

32:8Your fathers did this when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.

32:9When they went up to the valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel from going into the land which Jehovah had given them.

32:10And Jehovah's anger was kindled in that day, and He swore, saying,

32:11Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, because they have not fully followed Me;

32:12Except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun, because they have fully followed Jehovah.

32:13And Jehovah's anger was kindled against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation which had done evil in the sight of Jehovah was consumed.

32:14And now you have risen up in your fathers' place, a brood of sinful men, to further increase the burning anger of Jehovah toward Israel.

32:15For if you turn away from following Him, He will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and you will destroy this entire people.

32:16And they came near to him and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock and cities for our little ones;

32:17But we ourselves will be armed and ready to go before the children of Israel until we have brought them to their place, while our little ones dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

32:18We will not return to our houses until each one of the children of Israel has inherited his inheritance.

32:19For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and further on, because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan eastward.

32:20And Moses said to them, If you will do this thing, if you will arm yourselves before Jehovah for battle,

32:21And all of your armed men will cross over the Jordan before Jehovah until He has driven out His enemies from before Him,

32:22And the land is subdued before Jehovah, then afterward you shall return and be free of obligation toward Jehovah and toward Israel; and this land shall be yours for a possession before Jehovah.

32:23But if you will not do so, then you have sinned against Jehovah; and know that your sin will find you out.

32:24Build for yourselves cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep, and do what has proceeded out of your mouth.

32:25And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying, Your servants will do as my lord commands.

32:26Our little ones, our wives, our livestock, and all our cattle will be there in the cities of Gilead;

32:27But your servants will cross over, everyone who is armed for war before Jehovah for battle, as my lord says.

32:28So Moses gave command concerning them to Eleazar the priest and to Joshua the son of Nun and to the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the children of Israel.

32:29And Moses said to them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben cross over the Jordan with you, everyone who is armed for battle before Jehovah, and the land is subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead as a possession.

32:30But if they do not cross over armed with you, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.

32:31And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As Jehovah has said to your servants, so will we do.

32:32We will cross over armed before Jehovah into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance will remain with us beyond the Jordan.

32:33And Moses gave to them, to the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon the king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og the king of Bashan, the land according to its cities with their territories, the cities of the surrounding land.

32:34And the children of Gad built Dibon and Ataroth and Aroer

32:35And Atroth-shophan and Jazer and Jogbehah
Compare
-
32:36And Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran as fortified cities, and folds for sheep.

32:37And the children of Reuben built Heshbon and Elealeh and Kiriathaim
Compare
-
32:38And Nebo and Baal-meon-their names being changed-and Sibmah, and they gave other names to the cities which they built.

32:39And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.

32:40And Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he dwelt in it.
Compare

32:41And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its villages and called them Havvoth-jair.

32:42And Nobah went and took Kenath and its towns, and called it Nobah after his own name.
